South Africa U-19 v West Indies U-19
South Africa secure first win
Feb 18, 2008
South Africa has clinched a tight three-wicket win over the West Indies in their opening match of the ICC under 19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia.
Despite half centuries from both Kieran Powell (53 from 50 balls) and Devon Thomas (53 from 57 balls) the Proteas restricted the West Indies to 8-222 from their 50 overs with Wayne Parnell (3-37) and Obus Pienaar (3-36) the pick of the bowlers.
The South African chase appeared in trouble early when Jason Dawes removed opener Pieter Malan for a duck with the second delivery of the innings.
But solid contributions from JJ Smuts (45 from 43 balls) and Reeza Hendricks (36 from 56 balls) put them back on track before Riley Roussow took control and hit an unbeaten 58.
Shramarh Brooks did his best with the ball chiming in to take 4-39 from his nine overs but it was too little too late as South Africa reached the target with 37 balls remaining.
