Malaysia stun Zimbabwe
Feb 20, 2008
Malaysia created history with a first ever win over a Test-playing team at age-group level after a surprise 70-run victory over Zimbabwe in an ICC Under-19 World Cup Group A match in Johor Baru yesterday.
After a morale-sapping eight-wicket loss to defending champions Pakistan on Sunday, the Malaysians needed to show improvement in their play and were duly rewarded at the Temenggong Ibrahim Teachers Training College ground.
An 80-run partnership between Muhammad Faizal Abu Hassan (30) and captain Ahmad Faiz Mohammad Noor (50) for the third wicket helped Malaysia post a fighting total of 194 for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
Shahid Ali Khan then turned destroyer to capture three Zimbabwe wickets to spur Malaysia to the record win.
Sent in to bat after Zimbabwe won the toss, Malaysia put 103 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets
Faizal was bowled by Confidence Mutombodzi while Faiz departed soon after reaching his half-century off 77 balls when he was bowled by Daniel Landman.
On came Man-of-The-Match Shahid, who weighed in with a crucial 40 off 42 balls including four fours to set Zimbabwe a target of 195.
Tinashe Chinmambo (22) and Tendai Mashonganyika (24) top scored for Zimbabwe but lost wickets at regular intervals to be all out for 124 in 38.4 overs.
